Rovaniemi, the capital of Finnish Lapland is also known officially as… Santa’s hometown! This beautiful and peaceful town is equally amazing in the Winter, as well as in Summer, Spring and Fall time. Since one of its major attractions is meeting Santa in his office, a lot of tourists, including myself, come to visit this place in the Winter time.
Check out these pictures below and see for yourself just how amazing Rovaniemi is. Hopefully they might inspire you to come here too one day, in due time.
Landing in Rovaniemi is a spectacular experience in itself – so make sure to book a window seat in advance!
Norther Lights, aka Aurora Borealis
One of the main attractions of Rovaniemi, and the North of Finland in general, (as well as Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Greenland, Canada, and Russia) are the beautiful and simply breathtaking Northern Lights. Unfortunately, they do not show up every night as there are some certain conditions needed for them to appear. They include: a clear sky, with no clouds; a dark environment, as far away from artificial lights as possible; and the right time, which should be somewhere between 9pm and 3am in the morning.
Ounasvaara is a fun, open area place located on a short walk from the city center where one can go skiing, snowmobiling or even hiking, or snow trekking, as it has a number of beautiful, marked trails through the woods that surround it. It’s also a popular location from where you can watch the spectacular northern lights, whenever they come in town.
Santa Claus Village
This amazing site is located on a 20-minute drive from Rovaniemi, and is a fun place to spend your whole day at. There are a number of attractions located in the Santa Claus Village, such as: Santa Claus Office (yep, you can meet with Santa here and have your picture taken with him, for a fee), Santa Claus Post Office (buy and mail a postcard from here and it will be delivered from “Santa’s home”, with a Santa’s stamp on it; there’s also a special box where you can drop your card to be delivered before the next Christmas, if you came after the holidays), Santa Claus Reindeer (a place where you can go on a reindeer safari), Christmas Exhibition, Santa’s Shopping Center, and the awesome Snowman World with the Igloo Hotel (see pictures below).
Igloo Hotel at the Snowman World – a beautiful and cool hotel and a bar where you can get a drink or even spend a night in one of the dozen rooms located in there. This hotel is made entirely of snow and ice, and is assembled every single year once the first snow hits the ground.
